Adaptability and resourcefulness prevails over even the most devastating of life-changing events to accomplish the loftiest of goals.
Did you know a girl with a broken neck could still walk a half marathon, and even win a triathlon relay? Becoming partially paralyzed after a devastating unlicensed-motorized-vehicle vs. bicycle crash, Monique tells of her struggle to regain everything she lost, and more. Completing the New Orleans Rock'n'Roll Half Marathon just a few months after her release from the hospital, her determination and love for life has gained fame and influenced millions. She continues to move ever onward, and tells her story of adaptability and resourcefulness with insight and inner dialogue reflecting on how and why she’s so driven. Monique’s brutally honest view of life is counterpointed by sarcasm and attempts at humor.
Monique Koll was a successful veterinarian, triathlete, and single mother when she was hit by an unlicensed driver in 2012, breaking her neck and resulting in a C7 incomplete spinal cord injury. After losing her job, racing, and whole way of life, she has regained independence and success. In 2013 she gained national recognition when her partner pushed her wheelchair to cross the finish line at the New Orleans Rock'n'Roll Half Marathon. The Today Show and the Huffington Post, along with several others around the world, covered her story, and she walked it herself the following year. Koll has continued to cross finish lines, and her triathlon relay team received 1st place in 2014. Running for Lafayette City-Parish council in District 5, she is also the first President of Bike Walk Louisiana, the first President of the TriCajuns Triathlon Club, and was the first Executive Director of BikeLafayette.
Dr. Koll's speaking experience includes the SuperDome, the UL Softball Team, and several disability and protection services. She loves talking to athletes because they are always motivated individuals, and any audience where her message of determination can be shared with. Her topics include how to stay focused on goals, accomplishing goals, and how to stay away from abusive situations.
